In recognition of the importance of family history, the Surgeon General and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, have launched a public health campaign to encourage people to learn more about their family health history. While family history is important, does it tell you all your genetic risks? Simply put – no.
Family health history will tell you about your risk for diseases that have occurred in previous generations of your family, but a family health history cannot tell you about your risk to carry certain recessive genes nor can it tell you about your baby’s risk to have a recessive condition.
